The Thomas Gray Archive <info@thomasgray.org>
|
|
The selected prose works in the Primary Texts
section are intended to highlight Gray's critical efforts alongside his
creative and letter-writing. Gray's life-long devotion to scholarship as a
resident of Cambridge University resulted, much as with his poetry, in a slim
yet important corpus. The close relationship between Gray's poetic and
critical efforts is well-documented and finds expression in the essays below
devoted to the understanding of the history and theory of lyric poetry as well
as the analysis of individual texts. Equally, Gray's letters contain concise
criticisms on a wide variety of topics, from philology, philosophy, and
painting to archaeology, botany, and travel. The prose works in this section of
the Archive are listed by title as well as by topic, they have been
taken from C. S. Northup's edition of the Essays
and Criticisms by Thomas Gray (1911), which also contains examples
of Gray's criticisms in his letters.
